Currently Reading: NoSQL Distilled

When the rough cut version of NoSQL Distilled: A Brief Guide to the Emerging World of Polyglot Persistence became available through Safari Books, I engaged with the feedback contributors and even responded to early comments — incomplete or grammatically flawed as some were.

When the book officially released, I made a joke that you could just look at the table of contents on Amazon, cross-reference Wikipedia articles, and save yourself the money.

I was wrong.

After committing to a serious read last week, I discovered substantial value in the text. Three chapters in, and my earlier dismissal looks misguided. Fowler and Sadalage do a great job of distilling (pun intended) a complex, fast-moving space into something coherent and actionable.

Future posts on this blog will likely incorporate insights from working through this book. If you’re a developer curious about when and why to reach for a non-relational database, I’d recommend picking it up.
